Mouth Rot
Mouth rot in iguanas is also known as stomatitis. It is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection in the oral linings of the mouth. This leads to swelling and bleeding of the oral tissues.
Stomatitis is usually caused by stress. Stress lowers your iguana’s immune system which opens him up to the infections. However, improper cages temperatures or humidity can hinder the immune system. Another common cause is being fed an improper diet.
In its initial stages, mouth rot causes swollen gums and excessive salivations. As the gums keep swelling, they may start to crack and bleed. This can be very painful to your iggie and will probably prompt him to stop eating. He may not even be able to close his mouth.
If the infection isn’t treated, it will cause a variety of problems. They include eye infections, pneumonia, and tooth loss. The inside of the mouth will also change colors as it’ll be covered in pus.
If mouth rot is suspected, the veterinarian will need to take a biopsy or swab of the area. This will help determine the specific type of bacteria that is causing the infection. This is important because some bacteria are resistant to certain medications.
Fortunately, stomatitis is easily treated when detected early. Pus and other material will need to be cleaned out of the mouth. Topical medication may be all needed to treat the condition after this.
However, severe cases of mouth rot are more difficult to treat. Injectable antibiotics may be necessary to clear the infection. Surgery to repair damaged tissues may also be required. The root cause of the problem will also need to be corrected. Otherwise, the problem will just recur.

Hi there, I just stumbled upon your blog browsing on the Internet as I am looking for some info on yeast infections. Seems like a good blog so I have bookmarked this site and I will revisit tomorrow to give it a proper read when i have more time. Thank you.
I’m searching for some information for a yeast infection cure and I’ve just found your site! A good read which I thought to be of use. I will return to allow myself the opportunity to stay longer.
Huh that was weird, my comment got eaten. Anywho I just wanted to say that it’s good to see that somebody else also touched on this as it was difficult finding the same information elsewhere. Yours was the first place that helped me understand this. Much obliged.
